CSX RAILROAD WANTS TO SEND DOUBLE-STACKED FREIGHT
TRAINS THROUGH D.C. CSX
railroad has proposed to expand the amount of trains its sends through
Washington, DC. The proposal includes double stacked freight
trains and would require raising roofs on bridges and lowering some
railroad tracks across the mid-Atlantic. The cost of the project
is estimated to be in excess of $842 million. The governors
of Maryland, Virginia and several other states have backed the plan
and it is supported by the Washington, DC District Department of
transportation. Ideally, the plan could mean fewer trucks on highways.
One benefit of the proposal could be increased passenger service
by rail. Unfortunately, this plan will also result in short-term
congestion on highways. Ultimately, this could result in more
automobile accidents, car wrecks and other problems. Railroad
employees will also be at risk during the construction phase.
